![]() For instance, Fire and Rock makes an exploding fireball or spraying an enemy with Water and following it up with Lightning will cause double damage. The trick is figuring out combinations of these spells to produce different effects. The game doesn’t really have much in the way of progression as every element of magic is open to you from the outset of the game. There are 8 primary elements that you will have at your disposal, Water, Lightning, Fire, Ice, Life, Death, Rock and Shield. ![]() The spell system in Magicka 2 is arguably the deepest I have ever come across in any video game and it can be a bit daunting at first. As you travel throughout the world, you will find that the events of the world aren’t really all that important to the Magicka experience, serving only as context for the game’s primary focus, magic(ka). The general population, whose language sounds like something akin to Jar Jar Binks speaking literal gibberish, appears to be pretty happy about the Wizard’s current state of affairs, looking down upon them and celebrating their demise. You start out as a rookie mage in a world where wizards who once populated the world have become scarce after an event known as the Wizard Wars. This time, the comedically-oriented isometric dungeon crawler has been configured for console gamers and the result is a brutally difficult, and occasionally frustrating romp through a land full of fantasy, pop culture references and of course, magic(ka). This game is less about being beaten and more about The Big Funny. The Magicka series has made its way to the Playstation 4 after the first installment achieved a fair amount of success as a PC exclusive back in 2011. There isn't much to do solo other than cracking achievements. Take it with a grain of salt, grab a friend for your first playthrough. I imagine a lot of people playing with their friends had someone cast Crash To Desktop endlessly until either their friends or the person casting got removed from reality. This game definitely lends itself to the referential humor, along with the game being clunky and goofy and the entire storyline not taking itself seriously. Some of the strongest spells are raw elemental power (compared to spells in your spellbook). It was pretty fun to experiment with different combinations of elements, finding out how they interact with each other, finding hazardous combinations, and then finding a way to turn it on your enemies. ![]() The campaign is relatively short, so you only get to really explore the system from endlessly replaying the game with your friends. 7/10ĥ0% PCOne of the few games to this day to have a complex spellcasting system. Just well scaled difficulty where you are the problem, not the game. Even tough its an old game, I would still recommend it for its refreshing simplicity: no forced RPG elements, trailing missions or other crap. We could always recover pretty much where we left of, so that did temper the frustration somewhat. I played in coop, which is a fun experience, but we did suffer numerous crashes throughout our playthrough. Altough the line between cringe and humor is thin, it kind-off worked for me, but your mileage may vary. The story is serviceable and stuffed full of jokes that are so lame that it is kind-off funny again. The length of the game is quite ok for the type of game it is, it does not outstay its welcome. It really allows you to get creative and rewards experimenting with different combinations. While this may seem simple and shallow, it is the opposite. This is also basically the only game mechanic throughout the game. You can select up to five of these elements at the time to create a spell (water + cold = ice, etc), so there are thousands of unique combinations of spells you can create. Magicka revolves around combining eight elements in different ways to cast magic. But it turned out to be quite the little gem. 70% PCI wasn't expecting much of Magicka, as this was a game I got in some humble bundle once, and has been in my steam list for years.
